You may be one of the folks that feel studying chemistry in high school was a huge waste of time or one of those who know didn’t do chemistry and know next to nothing about it. Well, this article is about to prove to you that chemistry contributes to life in so many ways. Many of the ways could only be explained with scientific register and only to science literates, but a number of them are quite explainable to everyone. This article lists a couple of ways that chemistry helps our existence by solving everyday problem.
GUM REMOVAL – Have you ever gotten gum stuck in your hair, on your shoe or on your clothing? There are three things that will help you get it out easily. Firstly, you could spray some WD-40 on your shoe and in few moments you can easily slide the gum off. Secondly, you can rub peanut butter on your hair, comb the gum out and wash your hair. Lastly, you can put some ice on the affected area of your clothing and scratch the gum off without the slightest damage to the fabric. This is possible because of the chemical composition of these elements which makes the gum less sticky.
TEARLESS ONION CUTTING – If you cook a lot or just once in a while, then you must be always ready to shed some tears when it’s time to cut the onions. No matter how hard and fierce you are, onions will make you cry, but chemistry says it doesn’t have to be so. What makes you cry is the release of some acidic content from the cells of onions into the air and eventually into your eyes, but if you cut your onions in water, the content is released into water, no air. You can also refrigerate your onions to slow down the reaction and hence stop the acidic content from getting into your eyes. However, do not allow the onions to freeze as this will only make your tears more.
FISHING OUT BAD EGGS – If you want to crack some eggs open, you might want to know which one is bad so that it doesn’t mess up the good ones. Here’s one thing to do; put all eggs in water and watch which one floats, that’s the rotten egg. Good eggs will always sink but the hydrogen sulfide in the bad egg will make it float. You can however use the bad egg for a stink bomb.
REMOVING STICKERS – When you get a new product of whatever it is, you would definitely not use it with the sticker on it. It’s going to appear like you haven’t paid for it, but getting the sticker off can really be messy and annoying. However, if you spray some perfume on it or dampen it with a ball of cotton soaked in alcohol, if will come right off and very smoothly.
These hacks may not particularly save a life in the paramedic sense, but they actually do make life easier.
