Woodstock in the past was a career making moment for several bands and musicians which includes Still & Nash, Joan Baez, Crosby and Santana. Ex Santana singer and keyboardist Gregg Rolie made it public that if you had a gig at Woodstock then you’ve earn yourself a career.
Woodstock has a lot of famous participants but there were some of them who refused to perform at its event. Below are five of the memorable acts who refused to perform:
Simon and Garfunkel
This American folk rock duo are famously known for their amazing songs titled “The Boxer” and another one called “Mrs Robinson”. Simon and Garfunkel were asked to perform at Woodstock but they end up turning down the offer because they were too busy.
Several years after the Woodstock event, Garfunkel was busted for marijuana in New York. He was pulled over by a state trooper after he failed to stop at a “stop sign”. It was reported that a strong odor of marijuana emanated from Garfunkel’s vehicle.
Led Zeppelin was formed in 1968 and its first album was released in 1969. This band was among the fast rising band because it had its first album released one year after the band itself was formed.
Just like other popular bands, this band was also invited to play at Woodstock but their manager apparently had other plans so he declined the offer. This band spent their time playing the Asbury Park Convention Hall in New Jersey.
Despite the fact that Bob Dylan had a home in Woodstock and also recorded his music around this place, he still did not perform at the Woodstock festival in 1969. There are two reason why he turned down this event.
The primary reason was actually because his daughter fell ill and he couldn’t leave her side. The other reason was because he became uncomfortable with all of the hippies gathering around his home and he decided to bounce all of them. It was also reported that he moved out of the town shortly after the event
Bob wasn’t really bothered after missing the Woodstock event as he went on to perform at the England’s huge Isle of Weight festival two weeks later.
The Byrds band turned down the Woodstock festival after they were approached by the organizers to play at the event. The Byrds refuse to perform at the event because they thought it won’t be an influential music event. The band was also mostly concerned about how much they would earn from the event and if it was worth performing.
The Doors declined the offer of playing at the Woodstock festival at the last minute! The band was strongly considered to be among the best band that would perform in the event but this totally wrong and band member Robby Krieger later told the media that it was stupid of them never to play at the Woodstock feature because they thought it would be a second class repeat of Montery Pop Festival, so they turned it down.
Some other people say that Jim Morrison refused to play outdoors because he had a case of agoraphobia due to an actual fear that he might be shot by a sniper.
Drummer John Densmore attended the show on his own and he was seen on stage during Joe Cocker’s performance.
Above are some of the memorable acts who refused to play at the Woodstock festival in 1969. Other acts who refuse to play also include Jethro Tull, John Lennon, Jeff Beck Group, The Rolling Stone and Joni Mitchell.
