The musical
The latest project doing just that is no less than a Broadway musical! The play had its early previews in early March of 2020 but hasn’t had an official debut yet. For now, it seems that the musical will be released a little differently than other Broadway productions. Before hitting the Broadway stage, “Diana: A True Musical Story” will be released to Netflix in early 2021. The musical will tell the story of Diana and Prince Charles, from courtship to marriage, to unfortunate divorce. It will feature 26 musical numbers spread across two acts and a professional cast headed by Jeanna de Waal, who plays the titular character herself.
Online vs. in-person
Producers of the musical stated that the online release is no match for live theater but they are very excited about this new arrangement and about the worldwide online debut. It seems that releasing a theater musical on a streaming platform is becoming increasingly common, possibly thanks to the hit musical “Hamilton” and its release on the Disney + platform. “Hamilton” was released on the platform in August 2020 and enjoyed a viewership count of more than 260,000 users! Who knows? The online release might even create a bigger turnout when the play does hit the stage later on. The schedule is not final yet, but if all goes well, it looks like spectators will be able to enjoy a live performance of the musical this upcoming May!
