Born on December 8, 1982, Onika Tanya Minaj is best known by her stage name Nicki Minaj. She was born and brought up in New Orleans, New York.
In July 2007, Nicki released her very first mixtape titled Playtime is Over. She quickly followed it up with another mixtape the following year as she released Sucka Free in April 2008. Her hard work paid off as she was soon crowned Female Artist of the Year at the Underground Music Awards in the same year. She wasn’t resting on her laurels as she released her third mixtape on the 18th April, 2009 and the album received great air play on BET and on MTV. Definitely not bad for a start. One of the tracks on that album, “I Get Crazy” reached number 20 spot on the US Billboard Hot Rap Songs Chart and it also made the 37 spot on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
She signed with Young Money Entertainment headed by Lil Wayne in 2009 the same year as Canadian rapper and colleague Drake. Nicki Minaj featured on “Bedrock” and “Roger That” two songs that were on Young Money compilation album titled We Are Young Money. The two singles made number two and number 56 spot respectively on the US Billboard 200 chart.
In March, 2010, Nicki Minaj released a single from her “Massive Attack” album it was supposedly her lead single from the then forthcoming album but it didn’t turn out well and it really didn’t do well commercially. In June, 2010, she would remedy her past failure as she released her as her new lead single and it panned out brilliantly as the song made the number 14 spot on the Billboard Rap Songs chart.
In October 2010, Nicki Minaj became the very female solo artist to have a whooping seven songs on the Billboard 100 at the same time, an achievement that wasn’t to be taken lightly. Minaj was rewriting history. In November that same year, she released her much awaited album titled “Pink Friday”. The album sold over 375,000 copies in its first week. The album also received positive as some even referred to her as the female version of Lil Wayne because of her style. She received glowing reviews from Entertainment Weekly and Washington Post as an endorsement of her talents. Minaj followed up with more singles with “Moment 4 LIFE”, and “Super Bass” released in 2011. Both single were massive hits and only further polished her already reputation.
In February 2012, Minaj released a single from her forthcoming album which was to be her second. The single titled “Starship” made the number five spot on the Billboard Hot 100 and eventually became the fifth best-selling single of the year 2012. She dropped more singles afterwards and “Right by My Side” featuring R&B singer; Chris Brown was another hit as the song peaked at number 21 spot on the US Hot R&B Hip-Hop Songs chart.
Nicki Minaj has definitely carved her name in gold as long as rap is concerned as not many females come close to her numerous achievements
