Sharks are widely known to be aggressive animals, and that could be blamed on the horror movies that portray them as such. It is quite interesting to know that sharks exist in large numbers at some of the places where the hugest surfing action happens. How come they are not eating people like we see in the movies? This is not to undermine the fact that sharks could be very dangerous, but to show that they are not always dangerous. Deaths by shark attacks happen every year but there has never been a single occasion where sharks invaded a highly populated area, or attacked a ship, eating everyone in their sight. No. That only happens in the movies.
While there might be no imminent threat to surfers from sharks, it is important to note that the majority of the victims of shark attacks recorded are surfers. So, it is important to arm oneself with the knowledge of shark populations in various surfing spots.
Here are two places with the highest number of sharks, but that are also great for surfing.
Umdumbi – South Africa
South Africa is one of the best locations for filming shark documentaries. It is filled with sharks of different kinds, such that sharks even appear in surfing films when they were not intended to be covered. Usually, the government and the management of these surfing spots would install some kind of restriction – a strong net – in the waters, to stop the sharks from coming near the surfer. However, they forgot or ignored a number of important places which includes, Umdumbi. The number of sharks in the waters of Umdumbi are enough to call it a shark country. Since there are no nets sunk into the waters to restrict the sharks from coming close to the shore, there is always a threat or danger of a shark attack. As a matter of fact, there is always a shark attack in Umdumbi every year.
Honolulu Bay – Maui, Hawaii
Maui has some of the greatest recreational features in the world. There are different locations for tourists to enjoy. Also, Honolulu Bay is said to have lots of wild wave activity, that can only be seen in a few place around the world. It is the dream spot for professional surfers – a real challenge. However, the challenge is quite bigger. If you are surfing at Honolulu Bay, you should expect to encounter a number of tiger sharks because their population is highly dense. There are many occasions of shark sightings at Honolulu Bay, such that the management sometimes close the beach, restricting people from going near the waters to avoid shark attacks. According to history, the number of shark attacks recorded at the Honolulu Bay are quite low, so it may be a great experience that might outweigh the risks.
It is important to know the dangers of surfing at a new location before launching into the wave, because there might just be a school of hungry sharks behind that wave.
