Matt LeBlanc, riding high on the wave of his popularity as Joey Tribbiani on “Friends”, was offered the role of Jason Gibbons in the 2000 movie reboot of “Charlie’s Angels.”
Capitalizing on his Friends character, LeBlanc played a similar typecast as the obliviously endearing boyfriend of Alex Munday, played by Lucy Liu. The character saw the actor playing, well, an actor, and to add some true tongue-in-cheek, an action actor, at that. LeBlanc would return to reprise the role for the 2003 sequel “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle.”
Bernie Mac Then
Funny man Bernie Mac was cast in the role of Jimmy Bosley in "Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle", the sequel to the smash hit of 2000. The part of Jimmy Bosley was created to replace that of John Bosley, notoriously played by Bill Murray.
Murray reportedly declined to appear in the sequel due to the rumored on-set spat between him and co-star Lucy Liu. Mac played the inexperienced and hapless brother of the much wiser and experienced John Bosley.
Bernie Mac Now
Bernie Mac, having struggled for half of his life with sarcoidosis, tragically passed away at the age of fifty in 2008 from complications from the disease; pneumonia would eventually deliver the final blow.
His passing caused shockwaves throughout the entertainment industry, and two of his films had to be completed posthumously. Mac left behind a rich legacy of films and stand-up shows. His family opted to have a public funeral for the venerated comedian, and over seven thousand fans and admirers attended to pay their tributes.
Matt LeBlanc Now
LeBlanc's seminal role in "Friends" helped carry his career further into Hollywood, and he eventually landed his first starring role in the "Friends" spin-off, "Joey." The show received a lukewarm response and was canned after only two seasons. LeBlanc, who had been dealing with a divorce at the time, announced an acting hiatus.
Five years would pass before the actor made a comeback, winning numerous awards for his starring role in the critically acclaimed "Episodes." LeBlanc played the title character for four seasons in the CBS sitcom "Man With a Plan" before it was canceled in 2020.
Minka Kelly Then
California native Minka Kelly played the grand theft auto professional Eve French in a 2011 television revival of "Charlie’s Angels." Kelly’s character saw her rescued from a life of crime by Charlie to join his spy agency and become an Angel.
The series of the same name as the original attempted to revive the franchise but failed dismally. The series was canceled a third into its first season, with Kelly and her co-stars left high and dry after signing a contract for at least thirteen episodes. Forever the optimist, Kelly expressed her thanks to the small fanbase through her Twitter.
