The Most Surprising Unscripted On-screen Kissing Scenes

In Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Luke (Mark Hamill) has just moments to say his last goodbye to his sister Leia (Carrie Fisher).

Before he walks away, Luke plants a tender kiss on Leia’s forehead. Hamill revealed that the kiss was not a part of the original script but that it was a genuine action on his part.

This kiss was weighty for Star Wars fans because not only was Luke saying goodbye to Leia forever, but actor Mark Hamill was essentially saying goodbye to a character he had known for years.

The scene affected Hamill so much because Fisher died before the film was released. He could no longer watch the scene because of the emotions it made him relive.

The audience may never know if a surprising, on-screen moment was in the script or if the actor just chose to follow their character. Either way, if done correctly, these moments can totally shock even the most intuitive viewer.

On the medical drama ER, the romantic tension between Dr. Doug Ross (George Clooney) and Nurse Carol Hathaway (Juliana Margulies) left viewers on the edge of their seats during the show.

However, Clooney left the series, leaving dismayed ER fans to think their relationship was over. A few seasons later, Margulies also decided to move on from ER but, as a treat for the fans, the writers finally had Dr. Ross give that long-awaited kiss to Nurse Hathaway.

Viewers were shocked as they thought there would never be another romantic moment between the two.

In Lost in Translation, fading movie star, Bob Harris (Bill Murray) and young college graduate, Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) begin an unusual friendship in Tokyo, Japan.

When Bob says farewell to Charlotte at the end of the film, he plants an (unscripted) kiss right on Charlotte’s lips!

Johansson confessed she was completely surprised by Murray’s kiss, but her reaction to the unforeseen moment is what created so much authenticity in the scene.

As an avant-garde actor, Murray decided to take the creative liberty with his character and director Sofia Coppola approved of it in the end.

The Office is beloved by many viewers and is known for its unscripted moments, but the kiss between Oscar Martinez (Oscar Nuñez) and Michael Scott (Steve Carell) was particularly shocking.

When Michael finds out that Oscar is gay in season three, he does everything to prove that he is not homophobic.

In a daring act to convey his solidarity, Michael plants a kiss on Oscar‘s lips, obviously going too far. Nuñez admitted that, in the script, the characters were only supposed to hug but Carell decided to infuse a little more comedy into the scene by adding the kiss.

When Nuñez realized where Carell was taking the scene, he did his best to go along with it and the hilariously awkward scene speaks for itself!

In Edge of Tomorrow, Major William Cage (Tom Cruise) is caught in a devastating time loop that sends him back to the day before he died in battle again and again.

While trying to escape from the time loop and simultaneously save humankind from an alien attack, Cage pursues the help of Special Forces fighter Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt).

Because of the intense, action storyline, the filmmakers struggled to find a moment where a romantic scene between the two was appropriate. Emily Blunt, however, truly acted as the leading lady and took the initiative to kiss Tom Cruise during an unexpected scene.

Though it was not planned, it added greatly to the storyline, showing that Blunt was right to follow her instincts.

The highly acclaimed series Orange Is the New Black follows Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling) as she ends up in jail alongside her ex-girlfriend, Alex (Laura Prepon).

The show’s flashbacks reveal that the two women were romantically involved and how Piper finds herself in jail because of Alex’s criminal activities.

Though a reunion was expected at some point, it did not seem like there would be any rekindling of romance, given the muddy history between the two women. But to the astonishment of viewers, Piper and Alex share a kiss in the prison’s chapel.

This scene was what viewers were hoping for but it was still totally shocking as the broken history between the two characters made it seemingly impossible for them to reconcile.

The ‘90s hit sci-fi show, The X-Files follows FBI agents Fox (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson) as they explore unexplained, supernatural events.

Fans were hoping this duo would finally fall for each other, but the show’s creator did not want a conventional romance for the characters.

That’s why the kiss between Fox and Scully in season seven, blindsided X-Files fans. While in an alternate universe, Fox and Scully finally share a passionate kiss, making fans' dreams come true.

Although the two wouldn’t make their relationship official for years, the surprise of the first kiss kept the romantic tension (and the fan’s interest) alive.

American Hustle is a glamorous portrayal of the life of con artist Irving Rosenfeld (Christian Bale), his partner Richie DiMaso (Bradley Cooper), mistress Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams), and his wife Rosalyn Rosenfeld (Jennifer Lawrence).

The plot is centered on Rosenfield’s con-man career and relationship with his wife and mistress, but Sydney and Rosalyn have a rather intense scene of their own.

While in the bathroom arguing, Rosenfeld grabs Prosser, kisses her, and breaks away with a maniacal laugh.

Adams conceived the idea for the kiss, but it was Lawrence’s interpretation of the action that conveyed all of the edginess between the two women.

New Girl was a major hit with viewers for its brilliant, comedic writing as the characters were as hilarious as the situations they found themselves in.

The actors were free to improvise on the show. That turned out well for the characters of Nick (Jake Johnson) and Schmidt (Max Greenfield) who found themselves in a well-timed lip-lock.

In season one, when Schmidt finds out that Nick has a health scare, he grabs Nick and plants a “Godfather style” kiss on his lips. Though the character of Schmidt is known for his over-the-top, dramatic personality, Greenfield admitted that this move went a little too far for Johnson.

However, as the actors have worked together for so long, Johnson grew accustomed to Greenfield’s improvisational techniques!

Much of Gilmore girls is centered around the relationship struggles (romantic or family) of the mother/daughter duo, Rory (Alexis Bledel) and Lorelai (Lauren Graham).

Fans waited season after season for the romantic tension between Lorelai and Luke (Scott Patterson) to finally be broken.

Although they seemed to be the best of friends towards the beginning of the series, the feelings between the characters grew and, after many start-and-stop moments in their relationship, fans were left wondering if they would seal the deal.

At the end of season four, it finally happened! Lorelai and Luke shared a long-overdue kiss at an unexpected moment as Luke tells Lorelai to stop talking as he takes her in his arms. For diehard Gilmore Girls fans, this will always be a favorite moment.

In the beloved Jurassic Park franchise, Jurassic World features a sweet smooch between velociraptor trainer Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) and Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard).

The two characters have a rocky past, but gradually begin to resurrect their romance. The kiss was not to be found in the script, but it wasn’t a surprise to anyone except Howard.

On the last day of filming, the director pulled Pratt aside and suggested that he kiss Howard in the final take of that scene. In order to get the best reaction, the director didn’t warn Howard about the kiss.

The surprise kiss (which happened to be in front of 200 people on set) was a smart move by the director as it landed in the final cut and was a great moment for the audience.

MTV series Teen Wolf focuses on a small town where high schoolers encounter supernatural events. The nerdy and socially awkward character of the show, Stiles Stilinski (Dylan O’Brien) is smitten with one of his peers, the beautiful Lydia Martin (Holland Roden).

However, Stiles would have almost missed his chance at romance if he hadn’t gotten over his shyness.

Towards the beginning of the series, Stiles innocently kisses Martin on the cheek in a rather intuitive manner. Lucky for him, it made it into the episode.

The decision put Stile’s character in a new light. Given the response from fans, the showrunners then decided to work in a full-blown love story for the two characters in the series.

At the end of the Mockingjay Part Two (the final film in The Hunger Games series), Effie Trinket (Elizabeth Banks) and Haymitch Abernathy (Woody Harrelson) share a sweet kiss on the cheek and then on the lips!

Later it was revealed that a kiss was never a part of the scene but was, rather genuine gesture on Harrelson’s part.

Harrelson confessed that he had a crush on Elizabeth Banks and may have used this scene as an opportunity to make his personal dreams come true.

While one actor may have been a little more invested in the romantic moment than the other, both made it work for the sake of the scene.

In Top Gun, one of Tom Cruise’s classic films, Charlie (Kelly McGillis) confesses her love to Maverick(Cruise). Mid confession, Charlie adds how she doesn’t want anyone else to know how she feels about him.

Before she can even finish her sentence, Maverick goes ahead and turns up the much-needed electricity to the scene by adding a passionate kiss.

It was entirely unscripted and was actually a result of Tom Cruise forgetting his lines. Deciding that actions speak louder than words, the actor felt it was the right move.

The scene was supposed to end with the conversation between Charlie and Maverick, but after feeling that something was missing, the director included the improvised kiss in the final cut because it vastly improved the scene.

Viewers fell for the new cult classic, Stranger Things. In season two, fans were introduced to a new teen love story between Max (Sadie Sink) and Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin). Many episodes later, the two teens finally work up the courage to admit how they really feel about one another. This materializes in a tender, coming-of-age kiss.

But behind this special moment was a lot of anxiety for the young actors. The kiss was not written in the original script but was in fact, added during a take by the show's creators.

Sink, being the brave, young actress that she was, still went through with the kiss. Despite Sink’s professional attitude and her admission that she did not feel forced into the kiss, the show’s creators were still heavily criticized for adding this moment to the scene.

Fans felt that the minors were coaxed into the romantic scene. It seemed misplaced and inappropriate. While the actress maintained she was game, people, rightly so, were concerned.

Boasting one of the most intense fanbases of any show, Games of Thrones is full of violence, dramatic love scenes, and major plot twists.

In the seventh season of the series, there is an unexpected kiss between Yara Greyjoy (Gemma Whelan) and Ellaria Sand (Indira Varma.)

With all the ongoing flirting, fans may have had an inkling as to what was coming next. Clearly the actors read the room right because the kiss couldn't have been more satisfying.

Later it came out later that the kiss was improvised by Whelan and Varma. When the director decided the kiss was a keeper, Varma also had to kiss Whelan’s stunt double in the later scenes for the sake of continuity!

Helena Bonham Carter is known to be one of the most versatile actresses in the biz. At the beginning of her illustrious career, Carter had the role of Lucy Honeychurch in the Edwardian film, Room with A View.

While Lucy chats with her new friend George (Julian Sands) in the scene, the two share a passionate kiss.

At age eighteen, Carter was barely an adult and did not have a lot of romantic experience. She was surprised when the production crew suggested the scene to her, but she decided to take the chance and go through with it.

The kiss in the final version of the movie was completely improvised and as Carter later revealed, a bit clumsy.

Love Actually follows multiple romantic storylines that take the audience through all the ups and downs of different relationships. Some of the moments are beautiful and fulfilling others are absolutely shattering.

One of the scenes that viewers will best remember is when Mark (Andrew Lincoln) admits his love for his best friend’s wife, Juliet (Keira Knightley.)

Mark arrives at the house of his best friend and confesses his feelings through cue cards he wrote out for her. Juliet takes in the scene with a smile, Mark walks off, but Juliet finds him and, to his delighted surprise, goes in for a kiss.

While the entire sequence seems designed to be something sweet and innocent, this unexpected kiss more likely left the audience with a feeling of betrayal.

A central love story to the Star Wars Plot, Anakin and Padme's relationship is important, especially for the prequels. In the attack of the Clones, these two characters abandon their responsibilities in order to be with each other. When you're watching them, however, you can't quite believe what's happening.

The romantic feelings between Anakin and Padme are incredibly hard to watch, making it feel like these actors are actually doing the impossible by being just near one another.  Hayden Christensen and Natalie Portman simply have zero chemistry on screen.

Their body language and dialogue is strained making the romantic scenes terribly cringeworthy. It's actually rather hard to spot what drew Padme to Anakin in the first place.

While this was very much part of the script, this kiss was still surprising to watch.

In need of more unwanted romances? Try Jenny and Nick in The Mummy starring Tom Cruise (Nick) and Annabelle Wallis (Jenny). These two shared zero on-screen chemistry. Their intimate scenes pretty much ruin the film. The whole thing feels forced, making it incredibly cringeworthy.

Unfortunately Hollywood had to go for their typical manufactured romances. They should have dropped the whole thing.

Fans also felt that their large age gap contributed to their unsuccessful partnering. Wallis seemed uncomfortable with the whole thing.

They should have just kept it at the witty banter.

In Clueless, spoiled Beverly Hills teen, Cher (Alicia Silverstone) and her ex-stepbrother, Josh (Paul Rudd) always saw each other through the stepsibling lens. There was constant nagging, snappy comebacks, and incessant, petty arguments.

Cher had always seen herself with a certain type of guy but, towards the middle of the film, she begins to see Josh in a new light.

After the two begin to see more of the positive qualities in each other, mutual affection begins to grow. In the last few moments of the film, after the two have become good friends, they sit talking on the stairwell of Cher’s Beverly Hills mansion.

As Josh finally asks Cher if she cares for him, she playfully taps him on the shoulder as Josh makes his move and kisses her. Cher looks at him, stunned as a smile appears on her face. While Cher did not see the kiss coming, the audience certainly did!

In the dramatic and hilarious film, Crazy, Stupid Love, strait-laced law student, Hannah (Emma Stone) meets ultimate playboy, Jacob (Ryan Gosling) during a night out with her girlfriends. After a few overt passes at Hannah, she is disgusted with him while her friends soak up every word coming out of his mouth.

I n the following days, Hannah realizes her current boyfriend has no plans to continue a serious relationship with her and for the idealistic Lawyer, this is all the permission she needs to make an impulsive decision.

After breaking up with her boyfriend, Hannah returns to where she and her friends encountered Jacob. Upon finding him, she walks up to him and plants an unforgettably aggressive kiss on him.

The kiss was certainly a refreshing moment for the audience to see such a conservative character throw caution to the wind!

Parks and Recreation is known for its off-the-wall humor and wacky characters but there is also a little romance within all of that comedy.

The chemistry between Leslie (Amy Poehler) and Ben (Adam Scott) slowly simmers throughout the first few seasons until, at last, in season three, Ben makes a move.

After a completely platonic exchange, Ben takes Leslie’s face in his arms and kisses her. Initially, at that moment Leslie is surprised, but then she instantly kisses Ben back. And so their relationship begins.

The love story that formed for Leslie and Ben afterward became one of the most beloved by Parks and Recreation fans.

In this newly beloved Netflix rom-com, hopeless romantic Lara Jean (Lana Condor) has written love letters to, well, all the boys she’s ever loved, only to discover that her younger sister has delivered them!

Positively mortified, Lara Jean does her best to navigate a day at her high school as each boy comes forward to ask her about the letter that is addressed to him.

As one of the boys approaches her, in a moment of panic, Lara Jean grabs one of the unsuspecting jocks (Peter, played by Noah Centineo) and quite literally, kisses him down to the ground. Hoping she has thrown off her crush, Lara Jean quickly moves past the moment, but Peter is now hooked by curiosity.

Happily, for Lara Jean, the staged romance eventually leads her and Peter to a well-written love story in the end.

ER was not the first time actress Julia Margulies was involved in a surprise kiss. In the show The Good Wife, Alicia Florrick (Margulies) begins working for a former lover, Will Garnder (Josh Charles), from her law school days.

Viewers detected something might happen between the two, but they didn’t exactly know when.

After two full years on the show, it seemed that the potential romance had long passed and fans abandoned any hope of the two ex-lovers reuniting.

Turns out they were fooled! In the season two finale, Florrick and Gardner finally had their fiery moment, in an elevator! All that waiting ultimately satisfied the love-hungry fans.

In the first season of Cheers, Sam (Ted Danson) and Diane (Shelley Long) start off with a messy dynamic, frequently fighting with each other.

Still, underneath all the bickering, something was cooking between them and fans ate up every moment.

At the end of season one, Sam and Diane are in another typical heated argument, this time, seemingly to the point of no reconciliation. Until things take a turn.

Suddenly the two suddenly share a passionate kiss, immediately turning the scene on its head. This was really a shocking moment for fans and an excellent payoff.

The relationship between Niles (David Hyde Pierce) and Daphne (Jane Leeves) in Frasier was an amusing side addition to the show.

While Niles was quick to fall very hard for the light-hearted housekeeper in only the third episode of the entire series, it took time for mutual feelings to be developed.

Amidst his troubled marriage, Niles barely hides his feelings for Daphne. At least initially, she pretends to be indifferent, not revealing any of her own feelings. Finally, all the way into season seven, Nile’s brother Frasier confesses all of Niles’ feelings to Daphne.

The confession, coupled with Daphne’s consideration of Nile’s feelings towards her, leads to a passionate kiss that took seven seasons to happen. Needless to say, fans were thrilled.

While Gigli stars the glorious 2000s' "Bennifer," (Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck) the film is still considered to be a pretty awful form start to finish. The creators attempt to weave a kitschy love story in the midst of this gory and violent mess was weird, to say the least.

The story mostly revolves around a tough mobster who kidnaps a mentally challenged kid. Cue the romance.

Lopez and Affleck's impromptu kiss clearly did something. Unfortunately just not for any of the viewers. While the two fell in love over their intimate scenes, their chemistry somehow did not transcend the screen.

At least it resulted in a two year highly publicized romance. This was prime gossip mag material from 2002 to 2004.

In Passengers, Chris Pratt plays Jim, a mechanical engineer who supposedly wakes up in the middle of 240-year sleep on a spaceship. After discovering he has another 90 years to go until he lands in his new home, he kills time hanging solo.

That is until encounters the exquisite Aurora (Jennifer Lawrence) who seems to be riding along with him, asleep. Morally conflicted about waking her up and stealing her new life from her before it begins, he ultimately caves and wakes poor Aurora up.

To the viewer,  it puts the whole romantic relationship on a bad footing, to begin with. Essentially Jim robs Auruoroa of the life she could have had, had she just continued on sleeping safely in her pod.

Ultimately, what more could she do? He's the only guy there, so a relationship seems reasonable
